Peter Pettigrew, or Wormtail, was a rat in every sense of the word. He turned into a rat who was missing a finger and lived as a pet rat with Ron Weasley. He was the one to betray the Potters, and his nickname tells us all we need to know about his personality. The rat symbolizes the dirty, unclean, or sick. People who betray or snitch on others are often called rats for doing it, so the connotations are not very positive.
The one person he was most afraid of was Lord Voldemort, who was represented by a snake, being a Slytherin, having Nagini as a Horcrux, and being slick and sneaky like the snakes he could even talk to. Snakes are natural predators of mice and rats, which is a very interesting explanation of their relationship.
While Wormtail was afraid of Voldemort, he still served him out of fear to try and protect himself by being on the same side as the predator. This, as we know, did not work as well as he hoped. Severus Snape was a student at Hogwarts at the same time as the Marauders. Since they often referred to each other by their nicknames, Snape must have known them, as did many other students.
Once Dolores and her spies discovered the newly pronounced illegal actions were going on in the school she was now a headmistress of, she spent all her time trying to catch them and find out as much information as she could. Once Harry ended up in her office along with other students, she called Severus to bring her the truth serum. When Severus told them there was no serum left since she spent the last bit on Cho, she gets an idea to torture Harry.
Death, however, served to restore him to the peak of his good looks and vitality — his spirit was described as " tall and handsome, and younger by far than Harry had ever seen him in life. He loped with an easy grace, his hands in his pockets and a grin on his face ".
Sirius was true to the ideal of a Gryffindor student. He was true-hearted and brave, as shown by his participation in both wars and willingness to die for those he loved. He was particularly loyal to his best friend, James Potter , a fellow Gryffindor. In his youth, he was a witty and talented wizard, but also quite an arrogant and mischievous troublemaker, and sometimes, a bully. He bullied and humiliated those he particularly disliked, namely Severus Snape.
He was vicious towards those he hated, sometimes unjustifiably — deliberately sending the teenage Snape off to the Shrieking Shack when Remus Lupin was a full-fledged werewolf , while knowing that it could be fatal for Severus. He, along with James, were acknowledged to be some of the most brilliant students Hogwarts had ever seen, as proven by their ability to become Animagi as underage wizards and by the creation of the Marauders' Map.
The result of Sirius' nasty temper, the Fat Lady 's portrait in shreds. As an adult, Sirius was shown to be capable of an explosive temper when angered, a trait shared by his mother, Walburga Black , and his mad cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange. His years in Azkaban contributed dramatically, which was especially evident during and trying persistently to capture Peter Pettigrew , going to lengths that even Dumbledore commented as not those of an innocent right-thinking man.
Later on, he occasionally demonstrated himself to be reckless, immature, and even downright irresponsible. In several instances, he risked getting caught by the Ministry because he felt stir-crazy in his house, and advised Harry to take rash actions. Much of this can likely be attributed to the vast amount of time spent in jail, which stunted his emotional development and making him especially eager to spend time with and protect his loved ones.
However, through it all, Sirius had good intentions. For all his wrath and vengeance toward Pettigrew, he was capable of respecting Harry's request to not murder the man he escaped Azkaban to kill; opting instead to expose Pettigrew a plan that unfortunately failed, with catastrophic results. Despite this hatred for Snape, Sirius did display shame for his treatment of him in their youth. He also seemed to have possessed a superb mental control that contrasted sharply with his passionate and impulsive nature.
The fact that he was able to completely resist the psychological effects of the Dementors for so many years suggests that he had an unusually strong sense of self, and therefore was capable of withstanding long periods of emotional torture and despair.
Besides all this, Sirius seems to have some traits related to his Animagus form of a dog. Such examples are when James Potter points out Snape, and Sirius is described as " perfectly still like a dog smelling a rabbit.
Sirius' other dog-like traits include his need to protect his loved ones, his selfless nature, great sense of loyalty, and his need to be part of something bigger than himself, such as when he helped to plant the seeds of Dumbledore's Army and encouraged and enabled Harry to further the movement against Umbridge's increasingly totalitarian hold over Hogwarts.
His territorial protectiveness over the places and people he cared for were always evident, given how he stayed in his dog form for Harry after his encounter and duel against the newly resurrected Voldemort in Little Hangleton, comforting his godson in plain view of many people, including Cornelius Fudge, who still thought he was a criminal, at great personal risk to himself.

Kreacher was the house-elf of the Black family for years. Kreacher mimicked the family's pure-blood supremacist values, believing he should only serve pure-blood wizards; as such, he accused Sirius of being a "blood-traitor" and " breaking his mother's heart.
As a result, Kreacher grew to harbour a hatred of Sirius, which ultimately proved fatal when Kreacher was easily convinced to reveal the nature of Harry and Sirius' relationship to Bellatrix Lestrange. Equipped with this highly valuable information, Voldemort and his Death Eaters organised a plan that lured Harry to the Department of Mysteries with the intention of rescuing Sirius, who Harry believed was being held captive and tortured.

Sirius' years in Azkaban were spent with the knowledge that he was innocent, and that the true traitor and killer was Peter Pettigrew. So strong was the belief that Sirius was guilty that the fourth Marauder, Remus, thought one of his oldest friends was a killer and the reason that the Potters ' location had been revealed to Voldemort.

The old friends were about to finish Peter once and for all, but Harry Potter stopped them, telling them that Peter should be taken to Azkaban to clear Sirius's criminal record. However, the plan backfired, and whilst the others were distracted with Remus's sudden transformation into a werewolf, Peter once again escaped to rejoin his old master, Lord Voldemort.
Peter lost his hand in the process — to which his master replaced it with a silver one. Remus resigned from his post as a Hogwarts professor soon after when Snape 'accidentally' let it slip to the students and other staff that Remus was a werewolf. Voldemort returned to power for the second time, kick-starting the Second Wizarding War.
A new Order of the Phoenix was established whose members included both Remus and Sirius, who were both members of the original Order. He was strangled by his own silver hand , when he hesitated to murder Harry Potter in the dungeon of Malfoy Manor because of the debt he owed Harry for saving his life.
Lupin's death marked the end of the Marauders. His death also fortified the tradition of all four members dying in a way that is affiliated with Harry.
