Maybe try them for an hour max in there but cover them up with some cling wrap also. Please let me know how that goes. They eat the worms and you eat the chickens, kind of makes more sense than you eating them directly.
Yuk Yuk. That, combined with the large space required to farm cows and the significant contribution to climate change is why mealworm farming is much more efficient and you should eat them directly. I just started raising my own mealworms as a cheap alternative food source. I got large worms to start with and am keeping them in a ventilated container with oats and potato slices.
And, if so, what are some good ways to eat them? Hope somebody can help. Hi Ty. I have also been looking for an answer about this for some darn time.
The question is clearly stated. So many different types of beetle are already consumed so should be fine. Cook them well though — deep fry sound tasty! We are just getting started in raising our own mealworms. We started this mainly since we bought a leopard gecko and that is the recommended feed for them. We should have our initial shipment of 5, mealworms by the middle of the week. We are going to be raising them in a bed of wheat bran, with the occasional apple slice or carrot thrown in for good measure.
I like the idea of crushed cinnamon stick too. Wow you are getting of them! What a way to make a start. You might find that they get through the carrot quickly so always keep them handy. I got mealworms but had to split them with my sister. Thanks for recommending boiling and the purging. Even though that sounds pretty bad when I say it like that. No worries Danni, happy I could help.
There are those that eat them without those steps and do just fine, but better safe than sorry. Are you trying this also?
Yeah, I was thinking of starting a pen to raise them in. The worms themselves can get expensive if you want to buy them in bulk. Very true Danni. I have 2 pens going now and there is enough to feed my 30 odd fish in the aquaponics tank.
Growing them in oats is perfect because that and the worms go into the tank by the handful. Hi Judy — about 2 hours seems to do it. Will be determined by their size, ambient temperature, how long I boil them for, and all that. Just keep an eye on them and remove when the color gets deeper and they look glazed. BTW, did you know lobsters were considered a trash species until the early 20th century? Only the poorest of the poor would eat them before that.
Just goes to show how attitudes change. This is really interesting. Please keep posting! Thanks mate. More power to you…but something in me just recoils at the thought. Roughly how long do you dehydrate them for? Because there are potentially environmental and economic benefits, as they require less feed and produce less waste and carbon dioxide than other sources of animal protein.
And because Efsa, the EU food safety agency, has just declared them safe to eat. We already had some in, as it happens — a big bagful. We put them out for the birds. Batman the robin is particularly fond of them. Now they look like maggots dipped in chocolate, but at least they taste of something — chocolate. With a bit of texture inside, not unlike fruit and nut.
Still, better safe than sorry, so I order some ready-to-eat mealworms, fit for human consumption, online from a company called Crunchy Critters. The farming process involves separating the eggs from mating adult beetles, then feeding the larvae cereal such as oats or wheat bran, plus vegetables. When they have grown, they are rinsed, killed by immersion in boiling water and then dried in ovens. Or you can build a DIY mealworm farm at home, using a plastic container with drawers and feeding them oats and vegetables; there are videos on YouTube that show you how.
Anyway, the conclusion from Efsa — which is expected to lead to EU-wide approval and could soon see packets of mealworms and mealworm flour on supermarket shelves across the continent — followed an application from a French insect-for-food production company called Agronutris.
There are several other applications for insect-based food under consideration, including types of crickets, locusts and lesser mealworms also known as litter beetles, mmmmm.
Wolfgang Gelbmann, senior scientific officer in the nutrition unit of Efsa, explains the two questions the agency asks when considering a novel food. Novel foods are not required by the novel food regulation to be healthy — they are not intended to improve the European diet — but they should not be worse than what we are already consuming.
It will largely depend on what you feed the animals, but also on the energy and water input. Pat the worms dry with paper towels, place them in a container or plastic bag, and put them in the freezer for about fifteen minutes. This will quickly kill the worms. Spread the mealworms out evenly on a non stick cookie sheet.
If you are worried that the worms may stick, you can lightly grease the sheet. Place the worms in an oven at degrees and bake them for one to two hours until they are dry and crispy. Some people do not like the smell of baking worms and prefer to cook them outside on a gas grill set to a low temperature. NOTE: If you are roasting a large quantity of mealworms, you can use a roasting pan instead of a cookie sheet.
They may also need to be baked for a couple more hours.
